utility trailer tongue weight calculator

An open utility trailer follows the standard bumper-pull rule: 10–15% of the loaded weight on the tongue. Because the deck is open, where you place the load has a big effect on tongue weight.

utility trailer: the 10–15% rule

A utility trailer should carry 10–15% of the gross trailer weight as tongue weight, with about 12.5% as a practical target. Enter your loaded weight above and the calculator returns the exact range in pounds (or kilograms).

Loading a utility trailer to hit the target

Where you place the load is what actually sets tongue weight — the percentage is just the goal. To keep it in range:

  • Position the heaviest item so ~60% of the load sits ahead of the axle.
  • Strap the load down — a shifting load changes tongue weight and invites sway.
  • For a single heavy machine (mower, ATV), nose it forward and re-measure; small position changes move tongue weight a lot.

Typical setup

Crossovers, SUVs and pickups; landscaping, ATV, and general-hauling trailers.

Verify by weighing

The number above is an estimate from the standard percentage. Your real tongue weight depends on exactly how this utility trailer is packed, so once you're loaded, measure it. Also check whether your rig calls for a weight distribution hitch, and make sure your hitch class and ball mount are right for the load.
