How do I measure tongue weight?

Measure with the trailer fully loaded as you’ll tow it, on level ground. Use a bathroom scale directly for tongues under ~300 lb, a board-and-two-supports lever method for heavier tongues, a dedicated tongue-weight scale, a ball mount with a built-in scale, or a public CAT scale (weigh hitched, then unhitch and re-weigh the tow vehicle; the difference is the tongue weight).

Five ways to measure

1. Bathroom scale (direct)

Best for: Tongue weight under ~300 lb

Lower the coupler/jack straight down onto a bathroom scale on firm level ground (a piece of plywood on top protects the scale). Read the weight directly.

2. Bathroom-scale beam/lever method

Best for: Heavier tongues, over a scale’s limit

Lay a sturdy ~3.5 ft board across two pipe supports. Rest the coupler on a short block BETWEEN the supports — the block ~1 ft to one side of the coupler and the bathroom scale ~2 ft to the opposite side. Multiply the scale reading by 3. (The multiplier equals the total feet between the two supports when the block stays 1 ft from the coupler — supports 4 ft apart → multiply by 4.)

3. Dedicated tongue-weight scale

Best for: Repeated, accurate readings

Lower the tongue jack/coupler onto a purpose-built tongue-weight scale, which reads the load directly — typically up to about 2,000 lb.

4. Ball mount with built-in scale

Best for: Checking every time you hitch up

Some ball mounts have an integrated hydraulic gauge that shows tongue weight as you hitch the trailer.

5. Public CAT / truck-stop scale

Best for: Heavy trailers, whole-rig weights

Weigh the rig with the trailer hitched (trailer wheels off the platform), then unhitch and re-weigh the tow vehicle alone — the difference is the tongue weight. Disconnect any weight-distribution bars first, or they hide the true value.

Which method should you use?

For a small utility or teardrop trailer, a bathroom scale is enough. For a loaded travel trailer or anything with a heavy tongue, use the lever method or a dedicated tongue-weight scale. For the most complete picture of a big rig — including axle loads — take it to a publicCAT scale; it also confirms you're within youraxle and payload ratings, not just tongue weight.

Then adjust
