gooseneck trailer tongue weight calculator

A gooseneck carries far more at the hitch than a bumper-pull: 15–25% of the loaded trailer weight as pin weight, commonly planned around 20%. That pin weight sits in the truck bed and eats into payload.

gooseneck trailer: the 15–25% rule

A gooseneck trailer should carry 15–25% of the gross trailer weight, carried on the kingpin as pin weight, with about 20% as a practical target. Enter your loaded weight above and the calculator returns the exact range in pounds (or kilograms).

Loading a gooseneck trailer to hit the target

Where you place the load is what actually sets pin weight — the percentage is just the goal. To keep it in range:

  • Plan for pin weight to land on the truck: a 15,000 lb trailer at 20% puts ~3,000 lb in the bed, on top of passengers and cargo.
  • Distribute the trailer load so the pin stays in the 15–25% band; too little invites sway, too much overloads the rear axle.
  • Always confirm actual pin weight on a scale — GTW × 20% is only a planning estimate.

Typical setup

3/4- and 1-ton pickups with an in-bed gooseneck ball; flatbed, equipment, and livestock trailers.

Verify by weighing

The number above is an estimate from the standard percentage. Your real pin weight depends on exactly how this gooseneck trailer is packed, so once you're loaded, measure it. Also check whether your rig calls for a weight distribution hitch, and make sure your hitch class and ball mount are right for the load.
